Watching TV tonight and saw a segment on how to help your pet lose weight. Their idea was to reduce the food amount by a third and fill it up with vegetables and or fruit. I actually did this when I was trying to help my pets to lose weight but my Papillon ended up with a Ph imbalance in her urine which animals are at risk of if they have too much vegetable matter.
I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears watching this. I have been told this by my vets on a number of occasions. Once it was due to the meat and veg I was cooking and the other two times it was when I was giving them very expensive prescription dog food. I had to go to a lower vegetable amount prescription dog food which was even more expensive. Ow! Yes it did hurt. Me and my Dog.
When my Papillon got it she hypersalivated, vomited, rapid pulse and her urine was so awful it stunk to high heaven. The poor little bugger was really sick. Each time she did wee she cried too. The smell of it had me rushing her to the vet immediately. Registered Nurses are experts in number 2’s and number 3’s. We know when things are not quite right.
Ok so now I don’t give more than a half teaspoon of vegetable matter in the table scraps and that is not every day either.. But to give a third of the whole days food intake in vegetable matter is not increasing their nutrition. Of course they will be hungry and sick too. Oh, I could argue the point until my mouth froze with exhaustion but who would listen?
